Fire Safety Tips

The Michigan City Fire Department emphasizes the importance of fire safety and offers various resources to educate the community. They provide free smoke detectors to eligible homeowners and conduct educational programs for seniors, covering topics like fire prevention and emergency preparedness.

Plan and Draw Your Escape Routes

Gather everyone in your home and map out escape routes, marking all exits and the location of each smoke alarm.

Identify Two Ways Out of Every Room

Ensure all household members know at least two escape routes from each room by inspecting all possible exits.

Consider Escape Ladders for Upper Floors

For multi-story homes, keep escape ladders near windows and ensure everyone knows how to use them.

Establish a Safe Meeting Place

Choose a designated meeting spot outside, such as a neighbor’s house or mailbox, and mark it on your escape plan.

Assist Those with Mobility Limitations

Assign a person to help infants, older adults, or those with mobility challenges, and designate a backup in case of absence.

Install Emergency Releases on Security Bars

Install emergency release devices on security bars to allow quick exits during a fire, without compromising home security.

Make Your Home Easily Identifiable

Ensure your street number is visible from the road by painting it on the curb or installing clear house numbers.

Practice Fire Drills Regularly

Conduct fire drills until everyone can escape in under two minutes, practicing low crawling and emergency procedures.

Teach Emergency Response Skills

Train household members to wake up to smoke alarms, call 911, and use STOP, DROP, and ROLL if clothing catches fire.

Stay Out Once You Escape

Never re-enter a burning building; if someone is missing, inform 911 operators so firefighters can perform rescues.
