Our Community Education & Prevention programs aim to empower residents with the knowledge and tools to prevent fires and stay safe. Through outreach, workshops, and resources, we work to build a safer, more informed community.

Emergency Response

The Michigan City Fire Department is committed to providing rapid and effective emergency response to protect lives and property. Our highly trained firefighters and EMTs are equipped to handle a wide range of emergencies, including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and natural disasters. Fast response saves lives, make sure your household is prepared!

  • Call 911 immediately for any fire or medical emergency.

  • Have a clear and accessible address posted outside your home for quick identification.

  • Teach children how to dial 911 and what information to provide.

  • Keep exit paths and driveways clear to ensure quick access for emergency vehicles.

  • Do not attempt to extinguish a large fire yourself. Evacuate immediately and wait for emergency responders.

Fire Prevention

Prevention is the key to reducing the risk of fires and protecting your home and loved ones. The Michigan City Fire Department offers fire safety education and resources to help the community identify potential hazards and prevent fires before they start.

Key Fire Prevention Tips:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and on every level of your home.

  • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.

  • Keep flammable materials away from heat sources.

  • Never leave cooking unattended.

  • Have a fire escape plan and practice it with your family at least twice a year.

  • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it.

Inspection Services

The Michigan City Fire Department conducts annual fire code compliance inspections for all businesses within city limits. These inspections ensure that safety standards are met, protecting lives and property.

Key Inspection Details:

  • $50 fee for each inspection, payable to the Fire Administration Office.

  • Businesses must register with the city to be added to the inspection list.
  • The Fire Marshal reviews fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency exits, and more.

  • Private residences and rental units can request inspections as time allows.

  • Citizens with special needs are encouraged to complete a self-identification form to help responders during emergencies.

Resources & Special Permits

Certain events and activities require special permits to ensure they meet fire and safety regulations. The Michigan City Fire Department reviews and approves permits to guarantee the safety of participants and attendees.

To apply to become a Michigan City Firefighter, potential candidates must complete the Michigan City Fire Merit Commission Application for Employment and deliver/mail it to the Personnel Department at City Hall in an envelope addressed to the Secretary of the Fire Merit Commission.

Before returning, please re-check your application. The information must be truthful, neat and completed in full. Incomplete applications will not be returned to you.

PLEASE NOTE: The Personal Inquiry Waiver and Waiver of Liability on Physical Agility Test require notarization.

Under the City of Michigan City’s selection system, applicants for the position of Firefighter must undergo a background investigation that includes, but is not limited to, their habits, experience, and character. It is necessary that the City have access to any information about you that may have a bearing on your suitability for employment.

To qualify for further processing, the following items must be appropriately completed in ink, signed and dated in legible form:

  1. Completed, signed and dated Application for Employment
  2. Copy of your birth certificate
  3. Copy of a high school diploma or certified copy of a G.E.D. certificate
  4. Copy of your valid state driver’s license
  5. The attached Personal Inquiry Waiver – signed by applicant, dated and notarized.
  6. The attached Waiver of Liability on Physical Agility Test – signed by the
    applicant, dated and notarized. This document must be on file in the event of your eligibility for the physical agility test.

The Michigan City Fire Department operates its daily functions using taxpayer dollars allocated by the City of Michigan City. The additional community engagement work of the MCFD is made possible through community partnerships and the generous donations of individuals and businesses to the Michigan City Fire Department Donation Fund.

Other Donations:
The Michigan City Fire Department is always grateful for the community’s generosity and we are often asked “what can I donate?”.

  • Financial donations to our MCFD Donation Fund are the most effective way for you to support our education and prevention efforts in the community.
  • The MCFD will not accept old board games, old clothes, or used household items. Please make those donations to our local Salvation Army, Goodwill, and/or Citizens Concerned for the Homeless.
Fire safety training sessions can be scheduled by contacting our Community Education Division at (219) 873-1440. Please include your organization name, number of participants, preferred dates/times, and specific training needs. We offer training for businesses, schools, community groups, and residential buildings.
