Become A Firefighter

The Michigan City Fire Department offers training and opportunities for those interested in becoming a firefighter. Join the team to serve the community and make a difference.

Application and Selection Process

The Application and Selection Process includes submitting an application, passing a written test, passing a physical agility test, and an interview. Successful candidates undergo a background check and are added to an eligibility list for recruitment.

Obtain Application Packet

  • Download online or get a printed copy from the Personnel Department at City Hall.

  • Submit the completed application to the Personnel Department.

Examination Process

  • Eligible applicants take a written exam (must score 70% or higher to proceed).

  • Passers move on to the physical agility test (PAT), starting with a Ladder Climb.

Interview & Background Check

  • Applicants passing all tests receive a personal interview.
  • Successful candidates are placed on an eligibility list, pending a background check.

Training & Probation

  • Selected recruits attend a Fire Merit Commission-approved training program.

  • Graduates serve as probationary firefighters for 12 months before full placement.

MCFD Physical Agility Test

The physical agility test consists of eight separate events. This test is a sequence of events that requires the candidate to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. This is a pass/fail test based on a validated maximum total time of 10 minutes and 20 seconds. This sequence is as follows:

Stair Climb

75 LB weight vest for 3:20 minutes.

Hose Drag

1 1/2 inch hose line for 100 feet.

Equipment Carry

2 saws for 75 feet and return to shelf.

Ladder Raise and Extension

Hand over hand, lift ladder using rung.

Forcible Entry

10 LB sledgehammer till buzzer rings.

Search

Crawl through a 65 foot tunnel.

Rescue

Drag a 165 LB mannequin 75 feet.

Ceiling Breach

Push/Pull a 60 LB door with a pike pole.

Firefighter Training Program

The Michigan City Fire Department offers a structured training program to prepare recruits for the challenges of firefighting:

Fire Academy Training

Recruits complete a Fire Merit Commission-approved training program. Training covers firefighting techniques, emergency medical response, and hazardous materials handling.

Probationary Period

Recruits must complete a 12-month probationary period, gaining valuable hands-on experience through practical training under the mentorship of experienced firefighters from the Michigan City Fire Department.

Ongoing Skill Development

Continuous training ensures firefighters stay updated with the latest safety protocols, advanced firefighting techniques, and best practices, enabling them to respond effectively to any emergency situation.

Apply to Become A Michigan City Firefighter

To apply to become a Michigan City Firefighter, potential candidates must complete the Michigan City Fire Merit Commission Application for Employment and deliver it to the Personnel Department at City Hall in an envelope addressed to the Secretary of the Fire Merit Commission.

Under the City of Michigan City’s selection system, applicants for the position of Firefighter must undergo a background investigation that includes, but is not limited to, their habits, experience, and character. It is necessary that the City have access to any information about you that may have a bearing on your suitability for employment.

Completed, signed, and dated Application

Either the original or a certified copy of your birth certificate

Copy of a high school diploma or certified copy of a G.E.D. certificate

Copy of your valid state driver’s license

The attached Personal Inquiry Waiver signed by applicant, dated and notarized.

The attached Waiver of Liability on Physical Agility Test signed by the applicant, dated and notarized.

Responsibilities

Firefighters operate equipment and perform hazardous tasks under emergency conditions, often in challenging environments. While firefighting is their primary duty, most time is spent training, studying techniques, and maintaining equipment.
